It's basically a five-door variant of the C30, but there's nothing coupe-like in Volvo's Golf rival

The Volvo V40 to be unveiled in Geneva next month will be the natural successor to the current S40 sedan and V50 wagon, according to the master spy photographers at Carparazzi.

Since our original story about this new model, Volvo has officially announced that the hatchback will be badged V40. On the basis of the model name, it will be a wagon/hatch-like model with four side doors and a tailgate, with presumably smaller external dimensions than the V50 wagon. As well as the Golf, Volvo plans for the V40 to tackle BMW's 1 Series and the Audi A3 Sportback.

Carparazzi says that little else is known about the new model, which was snapped in sunny Scandinavia, but the styling is expected to follow in the footsteps of the S60/V60 and XC60. Don't be surprised if it arrives in the market with the options of direct-injected small-displacement petrol power, turbodiesel and Getrag-sourced PowerShift transmission. And further down the track, maybe a plug-in hybrid or EV could be in the works?
