This odd looking monstrosity is Great Wall Motors' very own camper conversion of its V240 ute -- and you could see it clogging Australian highways before too long.
The Australian importer is about to evaluate the Great Wall camper for local use.
Chinese car distributor Ateco Automotive has placed an order for one of the bulbous campers so it can study what changes need to be made, if any, for the vehicle to comply with Australian Design Rules.
It is assembled off line at the Great Wall production facility in China and fitted out there, too. "We really want the vehicle," said Dinesh Chinnappa, who is in charge of Ateco Automotive's future ventures. "But it comes down to how well it meets our local requirements and what equipment we decide to put in or leave out."
There is no target price at this stage, but one estimate puts it between $50,000 and $60,000 making it one of the cheapest ready-made campers on the market.
"If we do this, it will come with the works," he says. "The base price of other campers will buy you one of these with the works, fully loaded."
The Great Wall camper pictured had three bunks, a fridge, a microwave and a chemical toilet.
"We are still in the early stages, so we are least six months to a year away from introducing this if it gets the go-ahead," he says. "But this is a massive market and we think this is a very unique vehicle."
The test camper is due to arrive in Australia for evaluation in the next three months.
