Ford racing legend says new Falcon super sedan should not be called GTHO

Ford racing legend Allan Moffat believes the GTHO badge is too sacred to use on a modern version of the Falcon supercar.

Ford Performance Vehicles this week unveiled the fastest and most powerful Falcon of all time -- powered by a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 -- but the car maker is believed to be working on an even hotter version to coincide with next year's 40th anniversary of Moffat's 1971 Bathurst win in the mighty GTHO.

But Moffat believes that, if such a car were to eventuate, that it should not wear the GTHO badge.

Moffat's comments echo those of FPV, which last month stated that the GTHO badge should be preserved.

The four-time Bathurst winner, who is now an ambassador for the FPV brand, told the Carsales Network: "Ford is right to be careful about using the GTHO badge. It is a special badge and it should be respected.

"The thought is there [to re-incarnate the GTHO badge] and a lot of people like the idea but it is the past, a glorious past, and it should be treasured.

"A lot of people on first thought say 'why don't you just jump in and call it a GTHO?'. But it is an era gone, 40 odd years ago, and I think we should concentrate on the future and I think that's what FPV have in mind.

"It's a bit like saying in the 1950s, did anybody care about re-incarnating the Model T? I don't think so.

"In that respect we are light years ahead. The current GT, it would take 25 GTHOs to keep up with the car we have today."

However, Moffat says FPV has not ruled out building a hi-po version of the new car.

"That's not to say an absolute limited edition version [of the new supercharged V8] could be thought about, but there would have to be a lot of excitement going on to get it over the line," he said.

When asked if Moffat would be involved in the development of a new Falcon supercar, he told the Carsales Network: "I think I would be asked to do that and I would with great pride be involved, yes."

Meanwhile, Moffat's celebrations with the new GT start this weekend. He is due to do a parade lap in the new supercharged GT over the Bathurst 1000 weekend.
