Mitsubishi will launch a two-pronged attack on Subaru when its new-generation Lancer arrives Down Under next year. In addition to a top-of-the-range Evolution model, the three-diamond brand has confirmed it will offer a lower-spec Ralliart Lancer.
Mitsubishi Australia boss, Rob McEniry confirmed the maker would offer two levels of performance Lancer at this week's launch of the 380 Series II (more next week at the Carsales Network). The strategy is in contrast to the EVO-or-nothing approach of the last five generations of Lancers (EVO IV to IX).
While the upcoming EVO X will take its place as Mitsubishi's performance flagship, the lower-spec turbocharged Ralliart Lancer will target enthusiasts internationally.
The EVO X (more here) is due for launch internationally in October and locally in early 2008. According to McEniry, the Ralliart model will arrive "three to six months after the Evo."
Archrival Subaru has employed a two-level strategy with its Impreza WRX and WRX STi models since the all-wheel drive turbo rally weapon swept all before it in the late 1990s.
Just as Subaru offered a higher-capacity, lower-boost engine in its cooking-model WRX, Mitsubishi's Ralliart Lancer is tipped to feature a turbocharged 2.4-litre four in place of the EVO X's highly developed direct-injection turbocharged 2.0-litre firecracker.
Body treatment is likely to echo the US-market top Lancer (though still naturally-aspirated) Lancer GTS (more here) rather than the full-house EVO. The Ralliart Lancer's running gear and drivetrain trickery -- such as active differentials and the like -- are also likely to be tamed down from that offered in the EVO.
Importantly for Mitsubishi Australia, the Ralliart lancer is expected to provide a significant boost in sales volume. Priced closer to its Subaru WRX equivalent, than the full-house EVO X, the car will provide much needed volume for the company's soon-to-launched Ralliart performance arm (more here).
