Hyundai has added an auto/turbodiesel variant to its range of iMax passenger vans. Launched in petrol auto (four-speed) and five-speed manual diesel versions, the new five-speed auto turbodiesel will be priced from $42,490 -- a $2500 premium.
Matched to Hyundai's 125kW/392Nm 2.5-litre CRDi turbodiesel four, the auto box offers 'Selectronic' manual mode.
The new auto turbodiesel combination returns 9.8L/100km in ADR combined testing. In comparison the manual turbodiesel iMax is rated at 8.5L/100km and the auto petrol (a 2.4-litre four) 10.6L/100km.
Hyundai says to date, sales of iMax models have favoured the petrol/auto combination by a factor of more than three to one. Hyundai's Ben Hershman says the company is looking for the arrival of automatic turbodiesel to attract incremental iMax sales.
The iMax features antilock brakes and stability control as standard equipment. As we found out when we tested the vehicle (more here), however, its appeal to private users is hampered by the lack of flexible seating options -- neither the second or third rows offer folding convenience, for instance.
According to Hershman, around 25 per cent of iMax sales are to private buyers.
Hyundai has offered a diesel auto option on the iMax's van counterpart, the iLoad, since launch. Currently no auto/petrol iLoad is offered.
