Baby Lexus hybrid rendered by Mag-X

November 2008

Artist's impressions of imminent petrol-electric baby Lexus and 2011 Camry Hybrid are doing the rounds on the web

Murmurs of a Lexus dedicated-hybrid model due to debut at January's Detroit motor show have been circulating for some time (more here) and now Japan's Mag-X has published renderings of the so-called 'HS250h'

Mag X is speculating the car will be powered by a 2.4-litre petrol engine working in tandem with an electric motor, but is not clear whether the newcomer is a Toyota Prius-derived model, or a separate entity altogether.

Going on the rendering, it appears the hybrid retains elements of Lexus's so-called 'L-Finesse' design philosophy, with a high beltline and steeply raked front and rear windscreens. Its three-box sedan styling also clearly differentiates it from the hatchback Prius.

The Japanese mag is also suggesting the compact hybrid Lexus will be based on a platform that will also underpin a new vehicle that will sit between the existing Prius and the Camry Hybrid.

But, the latest news from local sources dispute this... Let, the Carsales Network help fill in the gaps...

Following discussions with Lexus Australia staffers and boss, John Roca, we can confirm that the so-called 'HS250h' will not come Down Under. Indeed, the car, which will be based on Toyota's TH3 hybrid platform and not the new Prius (also due for a Detroit release) will be a NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) model only, after failing to meet Euro V emission standards.

The base engine of the car is the latest 2.5-litre four that has appeared in models like the RAV4 in the USA and other markets. The TH3 hybrid platform and this new engine will feature in the updated Camry Hybrid set for sale in the USA. Non-Euro compliance means the car cannot be sold in Europe or markets like Australia.

Thus this is not the new "sub-IS" model that's been spoken of in Europe -- and could come Down Under.

That car, says Roca, while it could feature a hybrid drivetrain, is still to reach 'design freeze' stage. Indeed, the local boss says the basic configuration of the car, that is sedan or hatch, is still to be formalised.

Lexus has forged its reputation largely via its rear-drive IS, GS and LS models, but Lexus Roca had previously told the Carsales Metwork the newcomer could be front-drive, as buyers in its market segment would accept either configuration.
