Opel Insignia liftback revealed (June 2008)

GM's Euro-design mid-sizer will spawn a 'fastback' style as well as sedan and wagon

There's no need to keep Opel's Insignia liftback under wraps any longer. The sedan has been introduced in Europe and the final product was revealed in our story concerning the feasibility of a second locally manufactured product line for Holden (more here).

So the Insignia's styling -- with a Camry-style nose? -- is now out in the open, but the spy pics here prove that the mid-size Opel will also be sold in liftback form, presumably joining the Insignia wagon (Estate in Europe) sometime next year.

Our spy photographers at Carparazzi inform us that this liftback version of the Insignia will probably debut around the same time as the wagon -- at the British International Motor Show, opening July 23.

The liftback Insignia differs from the sedan in such things as the roofline, side swage lines and styling for the headlights and tail lights. Inside the liftback, the dashboard features a sweeping design from instrument binnacle to the door and Opel is reportedly planning to introduce this style on future models, which means it may well trickle down to the Astra.

Whilst we're unlikely to see the Insignia in Australia, it will probably influence future designs that will be sold in Australia, as in a successor to the current (and soon to be upgraded) Epica.

Opel will offer the new variant with the choice of front or all-wheel drive and seven engine options will comprise petrol fours and a V6, as well as three direct-injection diesels.
