Edo Competition feeds Enzo angry pills

May 2008

The storming Enzo Ferrari was a rare enough breed in the first place. Here's an even rarer -- and faster -- sub-breed

The Ferrari Enzo (or Enzo Ferrari, to be absolutely precise) is hardly a car in need of a performance upgrade, but that hasn't stopped a California-based mob named Edo Performance from implementing a host of tweaks and fiddles to the prancing horse's fastest-ever roadgoing model in the quest for even more pace.

Why? Well, we suppose, because they can (or could).

To use a cliché, the Edo brigade left no stone unturned in wringing every last ounce of speed out of the mid-engined V12 coupe.

For starters, attention was focused on the 6.0-litre V12, with mods including new exhaust headers (as per the racetrack-only FXX), a pair of high-flow catalytic converters, modified intake with ram-air system, high-flow air filters and ECU recalibration

They also slotted in a stainless steel muffler with adjustable remote-controlled butterfly-valve (noise levels are adjustable at the push of a button) and new exhaust tips.

Result? Peak power rises to 514kW (700 horses in the old scale), compared with the 'cooking' model's 485kW. Torque also swells from the standard car's 657Nm to 715Nm.

The driveline has to be upgraded to cope with the added oomph, and among the new inclusions is a high-performance clutch that's claimed to be extremely lightweight and offered in a choice of two different friction compounds -- strada/pista.

In addition, there's a new transmission control unit for the sequential gearbox that serves up the same shift times (claimed) as in the hardcore Ferrari FXX.

The bespoke lightweight wheels measure 10x19 inches at the front (with 265/35 ZR 19 rubber), while the rears are massive 13x20s (with 335/30 ZR 20 gumballs). The rims can be custom-painted on request, adding to the car's individualised appeal.

Its sport suspension is tailored for both road and track use, with adjustable compression and rebound damping, as per the FIA GT Maserati MC12.

The official press release doesn't quote any pricing/cost figures, but the performance numbers are tasty. Edo claims the 0-100km/h sprint is knocked off in 3.5 seconds, but far more impressive is the Edo Enzo's ability (claimed) to bolt from standstill to 300 kays in  22 seconds flat.
