TAKING DELIVERY
A quick phone call to Camberwell Volkswagen's Brand Manager, Dane Kelly, was all it took to arrange a time to meet; purpose: taking delivery of a new Volkswagen Touareg TDI.
With almost military precision, the Carsales Network fronted up to Camberwell Volkswagen on August 31, just before lunch.
We were welcomed by the receptionist, who promptly contacted Dane to let him know that we had arrived.
Despite the advance warning, Dane welcomed us warmly. We were kindly offered a cup of coffee while he arranged for one of his sales staff to conduct the hand-over.
That person was Damon Gauntlett. Damon (pictured with Ken Gratton from the Carsales Network) proved to be highly knowledgeable about the Volkswagen product range and was most obliging.
With his involvement, the Carsales photographer grabbed some warm and fuzzy pics (well warm and sharp pics, to be more accurate) with both parties smiling broadly for the camera as we delved into the complexities of the Touareg's comfort and safety features.
Initially, we did the de rigeur walk-around, with Damon pointing out some of the features, such as the electric tailgate.
From there, we moved into the car and Damon worked his way through the compendious range of instruments and controls, as we set up the driving position for optimum comfort.
Damon finished up with an explanation of the procedure for jump-starting -- the Touareg's battery terminals are located on the passenger side of the engine bay, but the battery itself is remotely located.
Finally, we were on our way back to base.
Two things immediately leapt out during that first drive. The engine is quiet by any standard, but particularly standards set by most diesels. Secondly, compared with earlier Touaregs, the new car is easy to place on the road and the larger mirrors certainly aid the field of vision in traffic.
